Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport announced Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, their intent to name BNA in honor of Dolly Parton, according to the governor's office. The airport's name has not changed. FOX 17 News reported the same day that the announcement does not immediately change the airport's name. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority's current naming policy and Lee's proposal will be addressed at MNAA's meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17. This is not Vanderbilt's Innovation District, not the $300 million East Bank transfer, and not Franklin's Poplars Reserve annexation. It is a naming-process file.

Lee said he spoke with Parton's team about the proposal this week. The governor's release said her team expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support, was touched by the idea, and was open to continuing the conversation. "Dolly Parton's extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state," Lee said. "At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state's favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly's music, generosity, faith, and kindness." Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, called BNA "the front door to Music City." CBS News reported that MNAA's current naming policy states airport properties should only be named for people who have been dead for at least two years. Parton died Tuesday, Aug. 25, at age 80.
